Coach BJ is a life-long athlete, and has been coaching power and endurance sports for over a decade. As most children do, he started out doing every sport. When the race bug finally hit, it was swimming and cycling that were the focus. Eventually, after many successful seasons in the 100m and 200m butterfly, he took the decision to put swimming aside to focus exclusively on cycling. Fast forward and Coach BJ is competing in track cycling, racing in the elite fields around the country.
With experience and certifications in training athletes for strength, power, endurance, and mobility, Coach BJ takes on athletes who compete in many different disciplines, triathlon, marathon, cyclocross, track cycling, road cycling, if it involves a bike coach BJ has you covered. His credentials include:
- USAC coach
- IKFF kettlebell
- ISSA strength and conditioning
- EFTI strength and conditioning
He loves the challenge of analyzing an athletes natural potentials and growth areas. Then devising and building a plan to best help that athlete reach and even exceed their aims and to “Maximize Their Potential!”. Whether you are training to finish your first century ride, pushing for the top step of an Ironman podium, aiming to medal at the national track championships or looking to improve your health and fitness, Coach BJ has the passion and plan to make it happen.

I’ve been working with coach BJ since May 2017, he is very responsive, and is willing at any time to make changes to the schedule if something is not agreeable. The routine has set patterns, but at the same time is always changing. When you tell him something doesn’t feel right, he will always send links to the stretches you need to do, to fix the problem you’re having. And he will be spot on. I have one PR in the bag and am confident of many more!!

I first met BJ when he was my spin instructor. I found his classes more motivating than any others that I’d taken – I actually wanted to try harder and harder. I reached out to him and told him that I wanted to lose 100lbs and ride 100 miles. He said “no problem”. In the last 18 months, he’s taken me from literally from zero physical fitness to a 65lb weight loss, and I just completed my third century ride (2 with 5,000 feet of vertical and 1 with over 8,000 feet). I never actually thought I’d be able to do it, but his workout plans have been challenging, yet achievable, easy to follow from a mechanical perspective, and goal-oriented. I continue to see constant and tangible results (every week I seem to set a new PR on one or more Strava segments). Weight loss has been slow, but relatively painless. Goal setting was easy, and constant motivation and accountability has kept me on track. I’m still a work in progress, but I think it’s fair to say that BJ saved my life. In 2014, I was trying to comeback from a serious hip injury and my goal event for the year was Master’s Track Nationals in Redmond, Washington. I was self-coached at the time but realized I needed professional support and advice. With John’s help, I won six medals and a National Champion jersey in the Team Pursuit. That fall, I decided to go all-in with John and Performance Cycle Coaching for the 2015 track season. Unfortunately, a serious crash in December kept me from training until March of 2015, when I finally hired him to coach me back into racing form.
In only five months John was able to take me from out-of-shape mom to winning six medals at Master’s Track Nationals in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as well as several podium finishes in road races, including third place in the California Master’s State Championship criterium. Most recently John’s been working on getting me back into cyclo-cross shape where I’m battling the Elite women racers again.
John makes the training both fun and effective while keeping the motivation level high. He responds quickly to any and all questions or concerns about workouts and he really cares about how you do at all your events. John provides the high quality, personal level of coaching I’d been looking for and I can’t wait to see how far we can go together next year!

BJ Olson is phenomenal. I’ve seen major improvements in my performance after just a few weeks with him than what I saw in a year and a half with my previous coach. He helps you down to the core in setting goals, analyzing weaknesses/strengths and is a huge motivator. Out of the 4 years racing, this season I’ve seen myself on more podiums than I could have imagined. BJ has been so persistent on post race summaries and video breakdowns which helped my tactical knowledge and whole vision of the sport excel. Everyday I feel more confident in my technique with all the good conditioning. Can’t wait for next season’s results!
