Larry Nolan – USA Cycling Level One Coach

  • Coach Larry lives with his wife of 36 years Debbie in Fremont, California. Together they have three (adult) children, and one grandbaby.

He ran in high school, at Saint Mary’s College, and in the “running boom”. Moving on from College he transitioned to Triathlon, winning his first world championship at the International Triathlon Union Vancouver, Canada (Clydesdale division). In 1990 a triple-trailer truck clobbered Larry while he was riding around Lake Tahoe, cutting short his running career. Now fully focused on cycling his true talent started to shine. However he quickly realized physical talent only wasn’t enough when racing in a pack and had to quickly address his lack of technical and tactical skills for success in bunch events. This self-awareness and willingness to look at his own weakness is what makes Larry such an accomplished and understanding coach.

With a passion for helping others that burns just as strongly today, Larry started coaching new racers at the local 5-week Early Bird Training Race Series. Twenty-six years later the series has grown to help about 250 brand new racers each year. Larry leads 50 or more coaches and mentors through the weekly curriculum with the intent to provide a great first race experience (and to keep racers in the sport).

2017 was the last of an 11-year run with the NCCF Team Specialized Juniors for Larry, who served as Team Director. In that same period there have been 48 teammates, 30 graduates, 27 in college or have graduated university, 38 teammates invited to European/ Ireland/ Canada trips, and 34 USA National Championships. In 2017, Larry coached Sean McElroy (22nd Paris-Roubaix) and Cole Davis (12th Pay de Vaud, 1st USA National Road Champion).

Although often too humble to share it, Larry is an incredibly accomplished racer in his own right, with 21 World Masters Track Championships wins and over 50 national titles on the road and track.

Add all this experience with a genuine desire to help and you have one very capable coach to put in your corner! Larry is excited to work with riders of all abilities with goals in either track or road racing. Please contact us today to find out how Coach Larry can help you “Maximize Your Potential!”

  • I like how Larry breaks down team tactics, so it is easy to understand

  • If it hasn’t been said enough, I’ll say it again: Larry is a wonderful teacher and an open book when it comes to mentoring. The topic of the night was gaining and holding position in a pack. As simple as it sounds, this is one of the more complicated skills to master as a racer. Larry was able to clearly articulate and demonstrate the general concepts as well as give real world examples of where and why one might use this skill. His wealth of knowledge not only as a racer, but as World Champion, gives him insight and experience your average coach simply doesn’t have. Also, because the bulk of the races we participate in are criteriums, and much of Larry’s success comes from criterium racing all over the states, I would argue that there isn’t a more qualified or experienced coach in the world that we could ask to guide us through the process of becoming better racersJohn has worked with me during various injuries and scheduling difficulties. I like to change focus from multisport to bike racing to cyclocross and mountain bike racing all in one season, and with his guidance and powerspecific training he has helped me achieve success across all disciplines. Under John’s training, I won the silver medal at Master’s Nationals in criterium in 2013, a top 5 overall finish in Xterra, first place in the Master’s Women’s NCNCA Series,an Omnium win at Red Kite Racing in the Pro 1/2’s, and recently a California State Championship in XC Mountain Bike.

  • Larry Nolan has been a huge part of my overall development as a cyclist. From the time I was a junior on Team Specialized to now being a competitive U23 rider on the USA National team. He instilled confidence when I had little, taught me how to read a race when I had no knowledge of any sort and was always there to listen and help me in any way shape or form. In 2014, I was trying to comeback from a serious hip injury and my goal event for the year was Master’s Track Nationals in Redmond, Washington. I was self-coached at the time but realized I needed professional support and advice. With John’s help, I won six medals and a National Champion jersey in the Team Pursuit. That fall, I decided to go all-in with John and Performance Cycle Coaching for the 2015 track season. Unfortunately, a serious crash in December kept me from training until March of 2015, when I finally hired him to coach me back into racing form. In only five months John was able to take me from out-of-shape mom to winning six medals at Master’s Track Nationals in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as well as several podium finishes in road races, including third place in the California Master’s State Championship criterium. Most recently John’s been working on getting me back into cyclo-cross shape where I’m battling the Elite women racers again. John makes the training both fun and effective while keeping the motivation level high. He responds quickly to any and all questions or concerns about workouts and he really cares about how you do at all your events. John provides the high quality, personal level of coaching I’d been looking for and I can’t wait to see how far we can go together next year!

EAMON LUCAS – 24-year old former Team Specialized teammate/ Professional trying to make it in Europe

  • New to racing in 2008, I attended an Early Bird criterium mentored by Larry Nolan, and absorbed his advice about seeing and sensing the cues of when to make a winning move. When I joined Team Specialized Racing, Larry and I shared a laugh about how his insight had led to us now being teammates!

    CHRIS LYMAN

  • Many years ago Larry showed me that the glory at the end of the race is worth all of the suffering during the race.

DANIEL HOLLOWAY – Texas Roadhouse/ 2017 USA Road Champion

  • Larry is not only teaching race tactics and techniques, but he also works to instill skills that are applicable to the other aspects of our lives and our future.

MARCUS SMITH – 17-year old/ Category 1 Team Specialized teammate

  • I started racing with Larry as a teammate in 2007, and from the moment I met him I was deeply impressed by his calm and polite demeanor under pressure, his racecraft, his will to win as a team, and his ability to coach less experienced riders like myself to bring out the best in us. I felt very strongly that his talent should be directed towards the development of junior riders, and believed that the skills he could teach them would apply in bike racing and in life. I put my money where my mouth was, and over time I have increased my financial contribution to the team because I have seen what Larry can deliver when he has the resources. He has brought not only his massive organizational and coaching skills to this program, he has also proven a strong scout and recruiter of talented young riders.
